Session 12 - 16 Working on your projects

You should have completed the Design Brief or be very close to finishing it. Once you have completed your proposal, you can start to develop your website. As mentioned previously, I recommend trying a couple of the website builders to see if they work for you and have a template that is suitable. When looking at templates, don't get bogged down with the style and colouring - look at the features and layout. You can always change graphics, colours, and of course content. Some tools that you can use to help with this process: Free CC0 images pixabay.com unsplash.com Image editing: Pixlr.com Create logos and other graphics canva.com desygner.com Assessments Just a reminder that there are 6 assessments in total for this class. They all need to be completed by 3rd December 2021. Session 11: Tracking, Closure and Review

Image
Tracking your Project with Project Libre There are multiple ways of entering "real" data into your project. You can use timesheets and enter details by the day/hour for each resource or you can add the information into each task. For a small project, I find that the easiest method is to add the actual data into each task. Before you start to track your actual information against your plan, you need to set a baseline. I will use the Project Libre file that we created in class to demonstrate the tracking procedure.  Setting a Baseline I will set mine to Baseline 1. You can have multiple Baselines for tracking purposes, whether they be for different sections of your project, or for different scenarios or plans. Once you have set the Baseline, you will be able to view the actual information against the plan. The plan shows up as a shaded area, currently underneath the plan. As you enter in actual start dates and progress information, the shaded area (your ...

Session 10: Risk Analysis and Website builders

Image
Before we get started at looking at and reviewing website builders, I will spend a small amount of time going over the Risk Analysis Assessment task and Milestones. Also happy to go over creating a Gantt Chart with Project Libre What is a risk? A risk is anything that will affect the outcome of the project successfully completing on TIME, within BUDGET, and meeting all OBJECTIVES. I recommend doing a risk analysis in a table or using a spreadsheet. This table should include: Details of the risk - a brief description of the risk Probability or likelihood of the risk occurring - this could be measured by using words such as low, medium or high or using some kind of scale or star rating Consequences of the risk occurring - how will it affect the project? What will be the effect on the project if this risk actually occurs? Strategy to mitigate or minimise the risk - how will you deal with the risk? What can be done to stop it from occurring? If it can't be stopped, can you minimise the...

Session 9: Design Briefs and Social Media Policy

Design Brief: Asking the right questions To be able to design a website that is appropriate and fit for purpose, you need to start by making sure that you have all of the information you need to create the website. Information such as background, goals and objectives, design, features, and functionality. One way of achieving this is to create a questionnaire. The questionnaire is used to help both you and the client decide what features are important and the kind of look and feel that the website needs to achieve. For your assessment, you will be creating your own website so you should look at these questionnaires and create your own responses. This should allow you to get a clear idea in your head of what your library is about, its history, functions, and how you would like your website to look. Here are some example questions https://designshack.net/articles/business-articles/15-must-ask-questions-when-taking-on-a-website-project/ https://marketingland.com/100-questions-you-m...

Session 9: Project Libre Gantt Charts

Image
Project Libre Tasks With Project Libre, you start by defining the basic information about your project. Once you have provided the basic information, you can start to create your timeline by entering the tasks into the Gantt Chart. Predecessors In class we will work through The Big Move class example to create the timeline for the project. Class Activity 1 Using Project Libre, enter the tasks using the Gantt Chart View (Completed above as a class) Allocate/Estimate the duration for each task (Completed above as a class) Determine any predecessors for each task (Completed above as a class) Critical Path Analysis The Gantt Chart view in Project Libre will display the Critical Path in red. What does that mean? The Critical Path is the first area that you need to concentrate your time management skills. Any activity on the critical path that takes longer than the estimate will affect your end date. The blue activities have a bit of "wriggle room" (I know, not a technical project ...

Session 8: Integrating Social Media

Image
Linking to your social media accounts Read the following article on embedding social media: https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/10673-embed-social-media-website.html One way to integrate social media on a website is to include a link to your social media accounts. Facebook Facebook has a plug-in generator that will allow you to embed a variety of Facebook items. https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/ Follow/like on Facebook Select Like Button from the left hand menu. Load the configurator and change/add your details. We will use the iFrame code as it is much more reliable and does not use Javascript SDK Paste the code into your HTML file where you would like the button to be. Save and run your code Page Plugin I added a like and embedded the page so my test web page looks like this: Embedded posts and videos You can embed any public post from Facebook. I have made this Facebook post public to demonstrate. And the result: Class Activity 1 Usi...
