Session 9: Project Libre Gantt Charts

Project Libre

Tasks

With Project Libre, you start by defining the basic information about your project. Once you have provided the basic information, you can start to create your timeline by entering the tasks into the Gantt Chart.

Predecessors

In class we will work through The Big Move class example to create the timeline for the project.

Class Activity 1

Using Project Libre, enter the tasks using the Gantt Chart View (Completed above as a class)

Allocate/Estimate the duration for each task (Completed above as a class)

Determine any predecessors for each task (Completed above as a class)

Critical Path Analysis

The Gantt Chart view in Project Libre will display the Critical Path in red. What does that mean? The Critical Path is the first area that you need to concentrate your time management skills. Any activity on the critical path that takes longer than the estimate will affect your end date. The blue activities have a bit of "wriggle room" (I know, not a technical project management term, but it means that there is some time available before it becomes critical).

Project Resources

There are 2 types of resources that can be assigned in Project Libre: Work Resources and Material Resources

Work Resources

Work Resources are those that perform, or are use to perform, a task in the project. They are paid, utilised, and costed based on time, such as per hour or cost per day. Work resources include people and hire of equipment.

In our tea-making exercise, work resources would be the person making the cup of tea and power usage.

Material Resources

Material resources can also be referred to as consumables. They are assigned and used by quantity. Material resources include any raw materials or ingredients and packaging items such as boxes or bubble wrap.

In our tea-making exercise, material resources would include the water, tea, sugar and milk

Class Activity 2

Think about our "Big Move" project.

What resources are required to complete the project?

Decide which are Work and which are Material resources.

Class Activity 3

Using Project Libre, enter the resources on to the Resource Sheet. (Again, completed as a class exercise)

Class Activity 4

Allocate the resources to each task (Again completed as a class exercise)

Class Activity 5

View some of the reports available in Project Libre.
