Session 10: Risk Analysis and Website builders

Before we get started at looking at and reviewing website builders, I will spend a small amount of time going over the Risk Analysis Assessment task and Milestones. Also happy to go over creating a Gantt Chart with Project Libre

What is a risk?

A risk is anything that will affect the outcome of the project successfully completing on TIME, within BUDGET, and meeting all OBJECTIVES.

I recommend doing a risk analysis in a table or using a spreadsheet. This table should include:
  • Details of the risk - a brief description of the risk
  • Probability or likelihood of the risk occurring - this could be measured by using words such as low, medium or high or using some kind of scale or star rating
  • Consequences of the risk occurring - how will it affect the project? What will be the effect on the project if this risk actually occurs?
  • Strategy to mitigate or minimise the risk - how will you deal with the risk? What can be done to stop it from occurring? If it can't be stopped, can you minimise the negative effect or turn it around to a positive? Is it a case of "some things just happen" and you deal with it if/when it does?
  • Person responsible - who is responsible for controlling this risk?
Generally speaking, if the risk is very low and the effect is minimal, you would just try and manage it if it occurred rather that putting a lot of effort and/or expense in trying to stop it from occurring.

Class Activity 1

What are the potential risks for your project not finishing successfully? We can do this on the Zoom whiteboard.

What potential strategies could be used to minimise the effect? Is it worth doing something about it.

Milestones

Milestones are a point in time during your project when you have achieved a small target or completed an important part of your project. On your Gantt Chart you define a Milestone by having the time part of the task as 0. On your Gantt Chart it will look like a diamond.

Website builders

Today we will explore some of the free website builders that are available.

If you would like more information and/or compare features, here are a few recent articles that review some of the free website builders that are available.

Here are a few that I have tried!

Wix

I let the Wix ADI do the job for me with this site. Get the basics and then you can just spend the time editing and customising the pages you need.

Others

Here are some others that you can try - I have tried each of these as well.

Jimdo

Webnode

Wordpress.com

Blogger

You can also create a basic website with Blogger. I am only including this as many of you are already familiar with it. It is fairly simple to create a website using Blogger, although the end result is probably not as good as some of the website builders.

Class Activity 2

Watch a couple of tutorials if you need to, but otherwise just join up and play!

Join up with and try at least 2 free website builders, either from above or any other of your choosing.

Logo Design

If you need to design a logo for your library, there are a couple of tools that you can use. I recommend Canva or Desygner

Canva

Desygner

Which one?

I tend to do most of my marketing and logo creation with Canva. This is not that it is necessarily better, but I like the way it works and has more of the free images/icons that I use. Plus it is Australian, which is an added bonus.
